Structured Play – Steve David

Steve reported that to date, there were 2752 participants in the structured play sessions.

Steve advised that there will be two “shoot out” sessions starting in the fall at the 4 p.m USAPA rated 3.5 and 4.0 +.  These will occur on Tuedsays and Thursdays.

Steve also reported that he had received more volunteers to help with the 2.5 novice sessions and is looking at ways to lessen the time commitments for the volunteers, i.e. commit to one month instead of three.  A suggestion was made that providing a training session for the volunteers might encourage more people to consider helping.  This will be looked into at the beginning of the fall season.

Skill level 3.5 & 4.0+ USAPA Rated 462 11.27
Skill level 4.0+ Self-Rated Shoot-out 66 11.43

Voyager In-house Tournament

The deadline for signing up is rapidly approaching (March 3).  This is an easy going tournament that is all about having fun and maybe trying your hand at tournament play.  Click on the "Tournament Schedule - Pickleball Tournaments" link to the right of this post, then look for the Voyager announcement and you're on your way.
The board is reviewing a request to purchase a pickleball machine for the club to use in drills and/or for individuals to check out for their own drills.  There are many things to consider including how to manage check-out, maintenance, storage and other logistics.  In addition, the board will need to decide where the purchase fits into budget priorities and predict how much use the machine will get in the long run.

WE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM OUR CLUB MEMBERS TO HELP US MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION.   Please, take a moment to answer these three questions and place your note in the suggestion box:
  1. Do you support the purchase of a pickleball machine?
  2. Do you plan to use it?
  3. If so, how will you use it – organized drills? On your own? Both?

Bonus question? Are you willing to assist with drilling or providing logistical support?

Announcement - Pickleball Clinic Change

The “Strokes and Strategy” Clinic” planned for Wednesday, February 24th will be changed to a “Referee Training” Clinic.  This change is being made to help prepare volunteers to support our upcoming in-house tournament and future tournaments offered at Voyager (and elsewhere). PLEASE CONSIDER TAKING THIS TRAINING.  It will help you become more informed about pickleball rules and will help the Voyager Pickleball Club by having qualified referees so we can continue to offer tournaments at Voyager.   All Skill Levels are welcome – you don’t have to feel intimidated as you can request to referee games at the play level you are most comfortable overseeing.

As always, the Clinic sign-up sheet will be available at the bulletin board near Court 6 on the Friday preceding the clinic.  The class will include instruction and practice.

February 24th (Wednesday)
11 am to 12:30 pm
Courts 9 & 10
Instructors: Ron Olivaries and Skip Deming

Clinic Cost: Waived for this Clinic

Announcement - Pickleball Clinic and Drill Change

The “Dinking with a Purpose Clinic” offered Wednesday, February 10th and the corresponding Drill offered Thursday, February 11th have been modified to make both sessions a CLINIC.  This change is being offered to accommodate more people into the clinic format due in part to the clinic’s popularity and in part to apparent confusion over the clinic and follow-up drill format.   The drill sign-up sheet will be replaced with a second clinic sign-up sheet for Thursday.  If you signed up for the Wednesday clinic and Thursday drill don’t worry, you’ll get a chance to drill in the clinic.  If you are on the wait list for the clinic or signed up for the drill only, sign-up again for the Thursday clinic and you’ll get both the instruction and a chance to drill.

This announcement provides a good opportunity to say thank you to everyone for your interest and participation in our newly expanded clinics and drills.  Your instructors donate time and energy to make them happen and find it very gratifying to have so many enthused participants trying to perfect their skills.  Please also note a couple of details about the program for your consideration:
  • Lessons, Clinics and Drills are offered at the same time each week: 11 am to 12:30 pm.
    •  Beginner and Beginner Lessons are on Mondays and Tuesdays
    • Clinics are on Wednesdays
    •  Drills are set for Thursdays and Fridays
  • Lessons and Clinics are instructional and usual do not involve a lot of practice or play.  For this reason, follow-up mentoring is offered for beginners during structural play and Drills are scheduled following most clinics to allow for practice.
  • The Clinic and follow-up drill should be signed up for as a “package deal”.  If you go to a clinic you do not need to sign-up for the corresponding drill, but it is encouraged.  If you have attended a previous clinic (on the same topic) you may sign-up for the drill.  If you have not taken the clinic, please don’t sign-up for the drill unless you have the instructor’s approval.  This allows the instructor to assist with drilling and not take time to redo the clinic information to a select few.
  •  The Player Improvement Program is a work in progress.  Bear with us as we try to perfect the format and information flow.  Your feedback is encouraged and you can always drop a note in the suggestion box or talk to a board member.
